Origin
The Church of England broke from Rome in 1534 under Henry VIII, initially over the royal divorce dispute but soon embracing Protestant theology under Archbishop Thomas Cranmer. The Anglican Communion developed the 'via media' (middle way) - retaining Catholic order (bishops, liturgy, sacraments) while embracing Protestant theology (Scripture's supremacy, justification by faith). Today 85 million Anglicans worship in 165 countries.
