Vineyard Churches

๐Ÿ“ Southern California, USA

๐ŸŒ ~2,500 churches in 95+ countries

Origin

The Vineyard movement was decisively shaped by John Wimber, a former Quaker and music producer turned pastor who taught 'Power Evangelism' - signs and wonders authenticating the gospel message. Wimber's 'Third Wave of the Holy Spirit' deliberately distinguished Vineyard from classical Pentecostalism (tongues not treated as normative) and from cessationism. His 'already-not-yet' Kingdom theology and emphasis on intimacy in worship reshaped global evangelical Christianity.

Core beliefs

  • The Kingdom of God is already breaking in but not yet fully consummated
  • Spiritual gifts (healing, prophecy, words of knowledge) are normal for all believers today
  • Evangelism is authenticated and accompanied by signs and wonders
  • Scripture as primary authority; the Spirit as its living interpreter
  • Accessible, unpretentious community: every believer is a minister

Worship style

Contemporary intimate worship music - Vineyard Music Group was enormously influential on global worship. Ministry time after services for healing prayer and prophetic words. Casual, non-hierarchical feel. The band and congregation share the same level - approachability over production.

Key scriptures

  • Luke 4:18โ€“19
  • Matthew 12:28
  • 1 Corinthians 12:7โ€“11
  • Mark 16:17โ€“18

Relationship to other denominations

Part of the Third Wave charismatic renewal alongside Toronto Blessing-connected churches. Influenced by the Jesus Movement and classical Pentecostalism. Vineyard Music shaped a generation of contemporary worship across all denominations.
